Examples of Sodium Levels in Some Foods

Sodium levels can be high in packaged foods, and even higher in some restaurant meals. Government guidelines set 2,300 milligrams of sodium as the maximum daily intake, but the Institute of Medicine says people need just 1,500 mg a day, even less if they’re over age 50. Many companies have introduced “low sodium” brands in response to increased concern about salt.

Studies Confirm Link Between Breast Density and Cancer

Having dense breasts has long been known to increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer, and new research confirms that a decline in breast density over time does, in fact, decrease that risk.

New research also has found that women taking hormone replacement therapy are more likely to experience an increase in breast density, a finding consistent with previous research that found women taking the hormones had a 24 percent increased risk for breast cancer.

The FREE Lecture on Total Health, Well­ness for Body, Mind & Spirit – April 27 – was a great success ! We had a packed hall with a wonderful audience and amazing speakers. John Westerdahl, PhD, RD, Director, Bragg Health Institute did an insightful presentation about “10 Power Foods for Anti-Ageing, Health & Beauty”, Sharon Baird, RD, MEd, MBA  Food Service Director, Goleta Union School District and Nancy Weiss, Nutritional Services, Santa Barbara School District did an inspiring presentation about the positive changes in the Santa Barbara Healthy School Lunch Programs, Sergio Gluschankoff, Organic Farmer, Synergy Organic Farms spoke about the benefits of organic and sustainable farming in a community and lastly Judi & Shari Zucker, Santa Barbara Authors of “The Double Energy Diet”  talked about the message of their latest book . After the speakers were done, the floor was open for a Q and A where Patricia participated. Prizes were given out to audience members after the Q and A and at the evening ended with a nice mingle between the audience and all the speakers.

VEGETABLE HASH

½ cup ripe olives, chop
½ cup red onions, chop
1 tsp Bragg Liquid Aminos
½ tsp Bragg Sprinkle
soy Parmesan cheese, grate
2 cups cooked soybeans
½ cup celery, chop
½ cup carrots, grate
½ cup beets, grate
tomato slices

Mix all ingredients together. Pour in a shallow, oiled pan. Cover with sliced tomatoes. Bake at 400°F for 20-30 minutes until tender. Top with grated soy Parmesan cheese the last five minutes.

Serves 5.
