Examples of Sodium Levels in Some Foods

Sodium lev­els can be high in pack­aged foods, and even higher in some restau­rant meals. Gov­ern­ment guide­lines set 2,300 mil­ligrams of sodium as the max­i­mum daily intake, but the Insti­tute of Med­i­cine says peo­ple need just 1,500 mg a day, even less if they’re over age 50. Many com­pa­nies have intro­duced “low sodium” brands in response to increased con­cern about salt.

Studies Confirm Link Between Breast Density and Cancer

Hav­ing dense breasts has long been known to increase a woman’s risk for breast can­cer, and new research con­firms that a decline in breast den­sity over time does, in fact, decrease that risk.

New research also has found that women tak­ing hor­mone replace­ment ther­apy are more likely to expe­ri­ence an increase in breast den­sity, a find­ing con­sis­tent with pre­vi­ous research that found women tak­ing the hor­mones had a 24 per­cent increased risk for breast cancer.

The FREE Lec­ture on Total Health, Well­ness for Body, Mind & Spirit — April 27 — was a great suc­cess ! We had a packed hall with a won­der­ful audi­ence and amaz­ing speak­ers. John Wes­t­er­dahl, PhD, RD, Direc­tor, Bragg Health Insti­tute did an insight­ful pre­sen­ta­tion about “10 Power Foods for Anti-Ageing, Health & Beauty”, Sharon Baird, RD, MEd, MBA  Food Ser­vice Direc­tor, Goleta Union School Dis­trict and Nancy Weiss, Nutri­tional Ser­vices, Santa Bar­bara School Dis­trict did an inspir­ing pre­sen­ta­tion about the pos­i­tive changes in the Santa Bar­bara Healthy School Lunch Pro­grams, Ser­gio Gluschankoff, Organic Farmer, Syn­ergy Organic Farms spoke about the ben­e­fits of organic and sus­tain­able farm­ing in a com­mu­nity and lastly Judi & Shari Zucker, Santa Bar­bara Authors of “The Dou­ble Energy Diet”  talked about the mes­sage of their lat­est book . After the speak­ers were done, the floor was open for a Q and A where Patri­cia par­tic­i­pated. Prizes were given out to audi­ence mem­bers after the Q and A and at the evening ended with a nice min­gle between the audi­ence and all the speak­ers.

VEGETABLE HASH

½ cup ripe olives, chop
½ cup red onions, chop
1 tsp Bragg Liq­uid Aminos
½ tsp Bragg Sprin­kle
soy Parme­san cheese, grate
2 cups cooked soy­beans
½ cup cel­ery, chop
½ cup car­rots, grate
½ cup beets, grate
tomato slices

Mix all ingre­di­ents together. Pour in a shal­low, oiled pan. Cover with sliced toma­toes. Bake at 400°F for 20–30 min­utes until ten­der. Top with grated soy Parme­san cheese the last five minutes.

Serves 5.
