Throwback Thursday – Fiesta Edition!

This week for Throwback Thursday, we’re sharing a fun photo of Dr. Patricia Bragg decked out in full Old Spanish Days regalia – with a pink flower dress, and a pink lace shawl. Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara is a nonprofit event dedicated to honoring and preserving Santa Barbara’s history, spirit, culture, heritage and traditions. This 90-year-old organization produces an annual eight day festival—Fiesta—that is widely regarded as Santa Barbara’s premier festival.

Fun at the Santa Barbara Fermentation Festival!

Bragg recently sponsored the Santa Barbara Fermentation Festival held at the Fairview Gardens in Goleta. The Santa Barbara Fermentation Festival is produced by Cultivate Events and showcases local and regional experts on the history, benefits and how-tos of fermented foods. This all-ages experiential one-day festival celebrates the art of making traditionally fermented foods and beverages such as kimchi, kombucha, kefir, pickles, beer, sauerkraut, wine, cider, cultured vegetables, and sourdough bread, and empowers attendees to make these foods at home.

Here are some snapshots from the event!

Don’t Skimp on Sleep!

Don’t Skimp on Sleep!

How much do you sleep every night, on average? 6 and a half hours? Perhaps 7?
The odds are, you aren’t getting sufficient sleep. American adults presently average 7 hours nightly.

While everyone’s sleep needs vary, most scientific research and studies indicate that we require 8 hours of sleep nightly.

A National Sleep Foundation poll discovered that 67% of American adults have sleeping problems and shockingly over one-third (37%) are so sleepy during the daytime that their daily activities become difficult and often interfered with. Over the past 200 years, we’ve reduced our average sleep time by 20% and, over the last 25 years, added an additional month to our annual work/commute time.

Thus, our national “sleep debt” is rising and while our society has changed, our physical bodies and needs have not. We’re paying a dear price for such “progress”!

Build Powerful Nerve Force

Pale skin, haggard countenance, bloodshot eyes, and an immune system that is increasingly becoming weak await people who don’t get enough sleep. Aside from an increased risk of contracting sicknesses, a petrifying infographic from the Huffington Post shows in great detail what sleep deprivation can do to you.

Studies highly recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. However, almost 40% of people in the U.S. get less than those mentioned hours. I was alarmed to find out the effects of losing sleep can take effect even in just after one night. Furthermore, a new study showed more scary results. One of them points out that sleeping for a week in sessions of less than 6 hours will cause negative changes to more than seven hundred genes.

See the damages in your body brought about by losing sleep:
