What is Nature Cure? Mother Nature's Way to Achieve Good Health
Nature Cure is far more than a system of healing aches and pains...it is a complete revoluition in the part of the Science of Living. It means following the Laws of Mother Nature, the practical realization and application of the answers which mankind has been seeking in science, philosophy, and religion.
The originature of Nature Cure was Vincent Priessnitz, a simple farmer...but a genius in the Art of Natural healing. He was born in 1799, in Graefenberg, a villager in the Silesian mountains of what was then Austria. His pharmacopeia consisted...not of poisonous pills and potions...but of exercise in the fresh mountain air, water exercises in cool sparkling brooks, and of simple wholesome county far such as black bread, cheeses, organically grown fruits and vegetables and with raw milk fresh from cows fed on nutritious mountain grasses.
The beneficial results accomplished by these simple means were so remarkable that merchants, princes, and doctors made the pilgrimage to Graefenberg to become patients and students of this gentle healer. Before he died, a large Sanitarium had grown up around his forest home and was continually filled with health seekers from many parts of the world and all stations in life.
The apothecary Hahn, the weaver Kuhne, the manufacturer Rickli, the carpenter Biltz, the priest Father Kniepp, and the physician Lahman all became enthusiastic followers of Priessnitz. Each one enlarged and enriched some special field in the realm of natural healing, such as the Water Cure and Natural Dietetics, Earth, Air, and Light Cures, Magnetic Healing, Mental Therapeutics, Healing Gymnastics, Thurz-Brandt Massage, etc.
From Germany, the idea of drugless healing spread throughout the civilized world. Dr. R. T. Trail of New York City, Dr. Jackson of Danville, N.Y., and Dr. John Harvey Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan, came from the United States to become Priessnitz's pupils. The great work achieved by these men in their respective fields will stand as monuments to Vincent Priessnitz, the Father of Nature Cure.
Valuable additions to natural methods of treatment were made by Dr. Still of Kirksville, MO., who developed Osteopathy, a system of scientific manipulation of the bony structures, muscles, nerves and nerve centers of the human body, and by Dr. B. J. Palmer, who originated the Science of Chiropractic.
The modern, worldwide Health Culture Movement had its foundation in the simple German Nature Cure. Every one of those early pioneers had the natural gift of the true healer who is born, not made. Realizing that mankind had strayed far from Nature's Ways, they studied the natural habits of the animal creation in field and forest, sought causes rather than mere symptoms, considered the whole rather than the parts, to bring the human back to his natural heritage of health.
Thus they proclaimed "The Return to Nature" and "The New Gospel of Health," which will yet free humanity from the curses of such "civilized ills" as alcoholism, tobacco smoking, society drugs, the embalming of foods for long shelf-life (and shortened human life) by devitalizing processes and chemical additives, and from yet a thousand other abuses practiced falsely in the name of medicine and science.
