New Study: A Healthy Plant-Based Diet Can Cut Type 2 Diabetes Risk by a Third

A Healthy Plant-Based Diet Can Cut
Type 2 Diabetes Risk by a Third

Read More at Forks Over Knives

The study, published online in the journal PLOS Medicine and funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, surveyed 200,000 health professionals for more than 20 years.

Researchers used a diet index in which plant foods received positive scores and animal foods and less healthy plant foods (sweet beverages, refined grains) received reverse scores.

Study Results

  • Overall, a healthy plant-rich diet that was low in animals foods was associated with a 20 percent reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • The most healthy plant-based diet (centered around whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts) was associated with a 34 percent reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • A less-healthy plant-based diet (more refined and processed foods and sugary drinks) was associated with a 16 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Even a modest reduction in animal-based foods (from 5-6 servings to 4 servings per day) was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

“This study highlights that even moderate dietary changes in the direction of a healthful plant-based diet can play a significant role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” said lead study author Ambika Satija, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Nutrition.

Study – Vitamin B Reduces Negative Air Pollution Effects

Study – Vitamin B Reduces Negative Air Pollution Effects

Learn More Here

According to a new study published in PNAS, researchers at Columbia University demonstrated that B vitamins may play an essential role in reducing the impact of air pollution. This is the first study to show possible interventions that may prevent or minimize the adverse effects of air pollution. Specifically, it shows how preventive measures with B vitamins can influence particular pathways that may mitigate these adverse effects.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 92% of the population lives in places where air quality levels exceed the limits of 10 μg/m3. Air pollutants can deposit in the respiratory tract, which can result in lung and systemic inflammation. Although there has been substantial lowering of air pollution through large-scale emissions control policies over the past few decades, its negative health effects are still common and may contribute to many complex health issues.

In this study, researchers gave participants a placebo or B vitamin supplement containing folate, pyroxidine, and cobalamin. Plasma B vitamin levels were assessed before and after, which demonstrated that B vitamin supplementation prevented changes in the genes involved in mitochondrial oxidative energy from air pollution.

The truth is, we all live in an ever-increasing toxic environment. More than 80,000 chemicals are introduced into the world each year and our indoor environment is likely more toxic than our outdoor environment.

We are exposed to pesticides, herbicides, chemical solvents, xenobiotics, and industrial chemicals of all kinds through the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. These toxins accumulate in our body and contribute to the total toxic load that can cause a variety of health problems. Unfortunately, this exposure to environmental toxins is often unavoidable.

What can we do? Support our detoxification pathways. There is significant evidence of the importance of diet and nutritional supplementation in maintaining detoxification pathways.

Market Rejection of GMOs Grows

Market Rejection of GMOs Grows

Four-Year Plan to Topple Toxic Agriculture

Ronnie Cummins, founder of the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) details the current state of the opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We first met about six years ago, when we collaborated to create the direct ballot initiative to label GMOs in California. A lot has happened since then, including the passing of what’s colloquially known as the Deny Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act, ironically misnamed “The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act.”

On the upside, in 2016 we saw, for the first time in nearly 20 years, a decrease in the amount of genetically engineered (GE) crops grown around the world, in terms of acreage. As noted by Cummins, “This represents the fact that this technology is failing, in the sense of superweeds and superpests are popping up all over the world.” In the U.S., three-quarters of farmers growing GE crops like soybeans, corn or canola are having problems with these resistant pests.

Market Rejection of GMOs Has Grown

Even more importantly, consumers around the world have become aware of the many problems associated with GE crops and the toxic herbicides and pesticides used on them, and do not want any of it on their plates. In other words, the market has started rejecting GMOs, and that’s what we’ve been fighting for all along. Nothing can or will change unless consumers apply pressure in the form of refusing to buy GMOs.

In the European Union (EU), which is the biggest agriculture market in the world, few if any GMOs are found on supermarket shelves. In the U.S. — despite industry spending hundreds of millions of dollars to manipulate market preference — about 40 percent of Americans still believe GE foods and GE ingredients are dangerous. Another 20 percent are unsure whether GMOs are dangerous or not.

“This combination of consumer rejection and, basically, Mother Nature’s resistance, has caused a drop-off,” Cummins says. “I think this is the beginning of the end of at least this generation, the first generation, of GMO crops.

Now, industry is saying, ‘Don’t worry about the fact that we’re using more and more toxic pesticides and herbicides … Don’t worry about these pests spreading across the fields. We’ve got a new generation of GMO crops where we can just do gene editing.

We don’t have to pull some DNA from a foreign species and haphazardly splice it into a corn or a soybean crop.’ But the bottom line is that this gene-splicing and this so-called new gene editing are unnatural processes that disrupt the genetic structure, the natural workings of living organisms. These aren’t going to work either.”

Eating more fruit and vegetables can increase happiness levels

Eating more fruit and vegetables can substantially increase happiness levels. Research from the University of Warwick indicates that eating more fruit and vegetables can substantially increase people’s happiness levels, to be published shortly in the prestigious American Journal of Public Health. Be Happy, Eat More Fruit & Vegetables

This study is one of the first major scientific attempts to explore psychological well-being beyond the traditional finding that and vegetables can reduce risk of cancer and heart attacks. Happiness benefits were detected for each extra daily portion of fruit and vegetables up to 8 portions per day. The researchers concluded that people who changed from almost no fruit and veg to eight portions of fruit and veg a day would experience an increase in life satisfaction equivalent to moving from unemployment to employment. The well-being improvements occurred within 24 months.
