The Way We Live Now: Junking Junk Food

Earlier this month, Sarah Palin showed up in Bucks County, Pa., with “dozens and dozens” of cookies, suggesting that the state’s schoolchildren risked losing the right to the occasional classroom treat because of a high-minded anti-sugar edict from the board of education. Pretty much everything about the setup was wrong.

New research suggests that the ubiquitous sugar known as fructose may cause certain fat cells in children to multiply faster, which might play a key role in childhood and adult obesity.

Cost of Junk Food May Influence Consumption

When the cost of junk food increases, people consume less of it, a new study has found.

U.S. researchers monitored the dietary habits and health of 5,115 young adults, aged 18 to 30, beginning in 1985 to 1986 and continuing through 2005 to 2006. During those 20 years, a 10 percent increase in price was associated with a 7 percent decrease in the amount of calories consumed from soda and a 12 percent decrease in the amount of calories consumed from pizza.

Kids Eat Less Junk Food When Middle Schools Stop Providing It

It seems like a no-brainer, and it is: Take the junk food out of school vending machines and cafeterias, and kids will eat less junk food, according to a new study that took place in Connecticut. When schools started removing low nutritional value snack foods and soft drinks as options, some claimed there would be a “forbidden fruit phenomenon” and that kids would go home and eat twice as much.
